"I Won't Surrender" is a song by American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz. It was released equally the first official single from his fourth studio album, Love Is a 4 Letter Discussion, on December 26, 2012, via iTunes.[1] It was written by Mraz and Michael Natter, and produced past Joe Chiccarelli.

The acoustic folk dejection and folk-pop carol was written during his activist outings and discusses not giving upward on loving someone, loving oneself, and not giving up on i's dreams. It received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who agreed that the vocal is straightforward, emotional and inspiring.

The song was also a success on the charts, debuting at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming his 2nd top-ten unmarried, afterwards "I'yard Yours" (2008). Internationally, the song achieved large success, reaching top-ten positions in Ireland and Netherlands, while reaching top-20 positions in Austria, Canada, the United Kingdom and more.

Background [edit]

Afterwards "I'm Yours" remained at the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a record 76 weeks ending in October 2009 (peaking at number half dozen), Mraz headed to the Gulf of Mexico during the summer of 2010 to aid with efforts to clean the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.[ii] Later, he went to a trip to Ghana to fight child slavery alongside the nonprofit organization Free the Slaves. Subsequently, Mraz was in Antarctica, spending time with Al Gore and learning well-nigh climatic change aboard the National Geographic Explorer. During his activist outings, Mraz wrote and recorded his quaternary anthology, Love Is a Iv Letter Word, with producer Joe Chiccarelli.[2] In an interview for Billboard, he confessed that he was less interested in following up his biggest hitting than using the ability that "I'thou Yours" gave him to fuel positive change.[2] He further elaborated: "The force per unit area I put on myself, or what I hope my 'I Won't Surrender' does, is to make a difference in people's lives . . . With 'I'chiliad Yours,' I got to become out and set my anxiety on unlike continents, and expose myself to dissimilar cultures and causes. I wanted to see who I was, outside of music."[2]

Mraz explained the track, in a "track-by-track" commentary for Billboard:

"'I Won't Give up' was written selfishly. As many of my songs are, I write for the purpose of understanding what the hell's going on in my life, my position in the world, processing that lesson and that miracle that I'm learning. Seeing information technology on the page, proving to myself that I sympathise the lesson, that I'm applying it to my life, and that I can motility on. Ultimately it was about, yous know, regardless of what happens in this relationship, I don't have to give upwardly on loving this person, or loving myself, or give upwardly on whatever my dreams are. Fifty-fifty though it's written through the filter of relationships, it's not necessarily specific for relationships. For me, the true meaning exists in the bridge saying 'I don't want to exist someone who walks away so easily, I'm here to stay and make a difference.' That is for all of us. Nosotros all have something that we're fighting for or that we're striving for. Whether we want to coach our soccer team to victory or lose five pounds in a calendar month, any it is, there's nothing too small worth fighting for and in that location's nothing too large worth going later."[3]

Limerick [edit]

"I Won't Give up" was written past Jason Mraz and Michael Natter, while production was handled by Joe Chiccarelli.[4] The acoustic folk blues[5] and folk-popular[6] ballad features a slower tempo and a thin arrangement written in the primal of Eastward major.[2] Lyrically, it is a poignant ode to a long-lasting human relationship, which Mraz says he won't surrender on her whatever happens.[7] "Well, I won't give up on us/Fifty-fifty if the skies go rough/I'm giving you all my love/I'k still looking up," he sings.[3] It is guitar led with some additional vocal landscapes towards the end of the song. Mraz told Billboard magazine: "That, to me, has e'er been my favorite part of making music; the singing and what voices can do and the voices singing in harmony."[7] It is probable that the song was inspired by Mraz'due south relationship with vocalist-songwriter Tristan Prettyman. Mraz showcases his low-cal and versatile range singing from B2 to 1000#4.

Critical reception [edit]

The song received generally favorable reviews. David Greenwald of MTV wrote, "The fresh runway's wispy acoustic guitars and patient tune remind us of Irish crooner Damien Rice's 'Frail,' though when Mraz soars into the chorus, it'southward with his own signature full-boom claw."[8] Loh Chuan Junn of MSN Music wrote that "The string-drenched, acoustic-guitar-based sound makes for easy listening, and gets into the listener'south head afterward just the showtime listen. With such an honest revelation of emotions in his lyrics, it's difficult to imagine the tune does non stir hearts."[ix]

According to Katherine St Asaph of PopDust, the song was probably the closest to his and Colbie Caillat's collaboration "Lucky." She added that it was "a gentle acoustic carol with a hint of speak-singing a ways in but otherwise straightforward and straight-faced [that] soft-rocks its way through sentiments similar "when I wait into your eyes, it's like watching the night sky or a beautiful sunrise–there's but so much they hold"–however hostage, but joke-costless."[10] Amy Dawson of Metro UK called it "a delicate, countrified guitar ballad that drives into a ability-chorus singalong determination."[11] Colin McGuire of PopMatters was mixed in his review, writing that "'I Won't Give Upwardly', for instance, is acoustic guitar-laden folky pop that falls at least a little fleck flat with its predictably bland approach. While the song'south hook proves itself memorable enough, the track never graduates into anything other than the ballad-similar tediousness the vocaliser has a tendency to revert into."[12]

Chart performance [edit]

While the song debuted at number viii on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it immediately hit the top spot on the Hot Digital Songs chart selling 229,000 downloads for its first week.[thirteen] On the Hot 100, the track's launch is the highest for a male pop/rock vocaliser-songwriter since David Cook burst in at number 3 with "The Fourth dimension of My Life" the calendar week of June 7, 2008, after he was crowned "American Idol" champion.[7] On Adult Pop Songs information technology began at number 36.[14] On the week of October 18, 2012, the vocal became the "Greatest Gainer" on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart, reaching number vii.[15] Subsequently the success, his manager Beak Silva commented: "What surprised the states is how the fans reacted. We didn't pre-promote the unmarried, nosotros didn't become to radio with information technology, and this vocal did 229,000 units its first week in the U.South. There was clearly something resonant almost the song, and it immediately shifted the strategy for what the rollout of the album was going to be."[ii] The song reached 4 million in digital sales past April 23, 2014, in the US.[16] As of Apr 2016, the song has sold 4,469,000 copies in the U.s..[17]

Internationally, the song as well achieved success. In Austria, the song debuted at number 23 on the Ö3 Austria Top xl nautical chart, on March 23, 2012. Later, the song jumped to number 22, before falling for two sequent weeks, until information technology reached once more number 22, on Apr 20, 2012. Afterward, the vocal reached number twenty, before climbing to number 17. On May xi, 2012, the song fell to number 21, but the adjacent week the vocal peaked at number 12.[eighteen] Information technology spent 22 weeks on the chart.[eighteen] In the Netherlands, the vocal was a large hit, debuting at number 52 on the Dutch Top xl nautical chart, on January 7, 2012. Later climbing the charts for six consecutive weeks and reaching number 11, the song fell for ii consecutive weeks, until it climbed to number 10.[19] The song kept on climbing for ii weeks, until it peaked at number 3, on April 21, 2012. It spent a total of 32 consecutive weeks on the chart.[nineteen] In the UK, the vocal debuted at number xvi on the Great britain Singles Chart week of March 24, 2012, and peaked at number 11. It remained for xxx weeks on the chart and became the 46th biggest selling unmarried of 2012.[xx]

Alive performances [edit]

Mraz first performed the song alive during his 2011 concert tour, well before an official version was released.[xiii] He performed information technology alive on Today on February 16, 2012, after on the Tardily Bear witness with David Letterman [13] and on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.[21] Mraz performed "I Won't Surrender" with Daryl Hall in episode 55 of Live from Daryl's House.

Music video [edit]

On January ii, 2012, a lyric video was released. Marking Blankenship from NPR found "I Won't Surrender" the best lyric video considering "the lyrics are integrated into a story most a homo who writes his girlfriend until they tin finally reunite." He added he preferred this video to the official ane.[22] The official music video was directed past Mark Pellington and released on February 17, 2012. Mraz explained "The story of the video is that we all have our stories. We all have our own version of suffering….and everybody has many things to non give upwardly on."[23]

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard constitute some similarities to Terrence Malick'south flick The Tree of Life, "with its lingering shots of wholesome Americana, lord's day-stroked imagery, non-linear construction and contrast between out-of-focus landscape shots and striking shut-ups." The video was as well compared to Bruce Springsteen'southward "We Take Intendance of Our Own" music video, "with its gritty portraits of beleaguered U.S. citizens of every race and creed."[24] Andrew Unterberger from PopDust described the video as "a stately, if somewhat ho-hum, assemblage of nature shots mixed with pictures of people immature and old looking semi-contemplative."[25]
